Eclipses
asterwise_get_western_eclipses
Solar and lunar eclipses in a date range, past or future, up to 10 years. Each gives the type, time of greatest eclipse, start and end (UTC) and the eclipse degree in the tropical zodiac. With birth data, each eclipse also lists the natal planets and angles within 3° of the eclipse degree by conjunction or opposition.
Parameters
| Parameter | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
from_date | string | yes | Start of the date range, YYYY-MM-DD (inclusive). |
to_date | string | yes | End of the date range, YYYY-MM-DD (inclusive). |
birth | object/null | no | Optional birth data. When given, each eclipse lists the natal planets and angles within 3° of the eclipse degree. |
response_format | enum: markdown, json | no | Output format: 'markdown' (default) for a readable report, or 'json' for the raw structured payload. |
What it covers
Swiss Ephemeris global eclipse search. Natal contacts use a fixed 3° orb. Without a birth time the Ascendant and MC are skipped (angles_checked=false) and the natal Moon is approximate.
Workflow
BEFORE: None — standalone; add birth for personal contacts.
AFTER: asterwise_get_western_transits_monthly — transits around an eclipse date.
Input
from_date, to_date (string YYYY-MM-DD, UTC, inclusive) — at most 10 years apart.
birth (optional WesternBirthData) — adds natal_contacts; house_system sets the Ascendant/MC computation.
Output contract
data.from_date, data.to_date, data.orb_degrees (3.0)
data.birth_data_provided, data.birth_time_provided, data.angles_checked (bool)
data.eclipses[] — kind (solar|lunar), type (total|annular|hybrid|partial|penumbral), max_utc, begin_utc, end_utc, sun_longitude, moon_longitude, eclipse_longitude, sign, sign_index, degree_in_sign, natal_contacts[] (natal_point, natal_longitude, aspect, orb)
Response format
response_format=json — structured. response_format=markdown — readable list.

Errors
INVALID_PARAMS (local): WesternBirthData validation failures when birth is given.
INVALID_PARAMS (upstream): bad dates or a range over 10 years → 422, surfaces as MCP INTERNAL_ERROR with the API message.
INTERNAL_ERROR: Any upstream API failure → MCP INTERNAL_ERROR
Do not confuse with
asterwise_get_western_moon_phase — ordinary new and full moons, not eclipses.
asterwise_get_western_moon_calendar — monthly phase table.
